Anyone who's been through the site far enough will know that I've been fortunate to become friends with a guy called Woody, who has been kind enough to take a lot of the email strain off me while I'v been realyl busy at work. I just hope he's not telling yo uall to get belt driven decks!! Anyway, I've asked him to put some stuff together that I can upload to my site to help out all the people who don't like cold emailing someone for advice, so, following is a lot of Woody's pearls of wisdm. And a GRRRRREAT equipment chart:- Woody's view on Technics and Vestax The Technics vs Vestax battle is probably one of the most talked about subjects on the board and various people have their views, more people like Technics but a few are beginning to enjoy Vestex. The battle has many different areas to consider and I will cover them all for you. I certainly prefer Technics, nothing comes close to them, they have been around for so long and it's not until you actually have a go on them you realise who good they are. Everything about them is fantastic, the build quality and everything is just superb, just the feel is amazing. They are so accurate and the timing is superb. The pitch range may only be 8+ but it's just enough and the pitch range switch is so accurate, with the just the slightest nudge the pitch changes, but don't worry, these babies are really strong, it takes a good nudge to move them!! For build and looks the 1200 wins by miles, pure metallic silver..hmmmmmm goregous!! (and black......) People who haven't experience Technics, won't understand what so special about them, the build, platter, the quality everything about them is just amazing and if you an excellent quality for money deck which is very reliable check out the Technics, I know someone who has had their Technics for over 10years and I've had people coming upto me complaining about Vestax models going down after 6months. What I will say for the Vestax models is that, they do have good features available and it is a very good attempt of over-ruling Technics, they probably will in a few years time because of the features available to make your sets better and they are something new and the closest thing to technics, already a few clubs are installing them, but at the moment Technics is still number 1 around. The platter is quite strong but it lacks Quartz control, which some people say ti doesn't matter but thats what makes the Technics so special. Quartz control makes the deck and the timing of it spinning round really, really exact upto the milli-second as quartz as you know is used in clocks so it's got be very reliable with time. So this means that without quartz control, the deck can slow down and lose control quicker as it doesn't hold it's pitch. Yes the Vestax may have some nice features but whats the point of it not holding it's pitch well, and thats what I found after the Technics, I was testing them out and for the price, I found Vestax unreasonable, good features but the everything else didn't seem right. Technics has a supreme quality which nothing can go near and it will be still the best deck around when Vestax takes over, until Technics invent something more radical and better in the coming years I would say if you were looking for something with good features and good perspective future I would go with Vestax, if you want something which is just supreme quality go for Technics!! If you are looking for something new and futureistic development get Vestex but for pure quality and a standard which will never be matched choose Technics!! Woody's view on Belt and Direct Drive This is a question which always comes about and there is only one answer-DIRECT DRIVE!! (told you - Recess) I don't know why companies still make belt drive decks, they are a load of rubbish, very very poor quality and just not right. Belt drive decks are powered by a belt, which turns the platter and this makes it very slow and very low power. Start up time is very minimal and very sloppy. Due to the lack of power, when you cue up the record by using your finger or simply touch the record whilst in the mix to keep everything in time, the whole deck goes out of sync and well it's pathetic!! Direct drives are powered by an electric current and the motor is much nearer the platter making the deck so much more stronger, even the weaker direct drive decks are better in comparision to the best belt drive. Direct drives have a lot of power, so placing your finger on the record, the power will keep running and once letting go all that power will surge forward and make a quick start up time. So if you are ever looking for a deck, please, please keep away from belt drive. Woody's Style Of Music Description House Funky, groovy, commerical, cheesy, soulful, deep, disco, vocal, uplifiting - started off the dance scene in America, and later over here too. Frankie Knuckles being one of the big founders, helping the scene get going underground and soon formulating a new sound which will go worldwide. House is a very wide range of style. From 70s sort of disco, the soulful stuff more upbeat r'n'b and the deep stuff more dark and more downcast to the uplifting stuff normally. The music is very complex and well made, also it's not all computerised, made with real instruments and people who really know their music. Artists include King Unique, Spiller, Modjo, Madison Avenue, Richard Grey, Kings Of Tomorrow, Junior Jack, Ministers De La Funk, Bob Sinclair and David Morales, (Roger Sanchez, Junior Sanchez, Masters at Work, Todd Terry in fact, I'm stopping there, just be asured there's LOTS of them) Garage Upbeat r'n'b, normally contains loads of remixes of r'n'b tunes. The beat is very complexed, known as two step, instead of a normal 1-2-3-4 beat the beat may also contain a top hat or another beat in between so it becomes 1-(hat)-2-(hat)-3-(hat)-4. Artists include:-Artful Dodger, B15 Project, DJ Luck and MC Neat. R'n'B Mentioned this quite a bit, popular in America and has now become more part of the pop scene with artists such as Eminem, Shaggy, Britney and J'LO describing their music as R'N'B which is complete bollocks. R'n'B is smooth, sexy, very well made and the music tells a story. The music is very relaxing and gets you in the mood as in the words of Trevor Nelson "to make lurrrve". Very very smooth. Artists include:-Joe, Sunshine Anderson and Craig David. (I don't know many-not my style!!) Progressive House Dark, deep, thumping, tribal-Unlike house described earlier, this type of house is exactly what is "progressive" used by trance DJs to start of their sets. You can't really describe progressive house, you've got to hear it, as Sander Kleinenburg says "it's an emotion, a feeling" and it is. It's not like house and it's not trance and it's not really a mixture. Just dark, deep powerful tunes, really emotional. Especially Max Graham's stuff-wicked-really well made and it's just really good to listen to!! Artists include:-Sander Kleinenburg, Seb Fontaine, Max Graham, Lucien Foort, Sputnik, XPress2, Futureshock and Peace Division. (Sasha and Digweed have largely gone back to the prorgessive thing again - which is grrrrrrreat! Recess) Trance Sometimes commercial and cheesy, energetic, harder, uplifting, melodic-It hasn't been around as long as house but it's certainly made a bigger impact. You will always find this playing somewhere. Big powerful basslines and thumping drumbeats. Computer made, from synths, sequencers and will really get people on the dancefloor. Really makes the set move up stages and create a good feeling. Melodic and progressive trance, is a style which Paul Van Dyk DJs, not very powerful and won't really set the place on fire but can be really emotive and get that set going. The more harder and energetic stuff really gets people moving, big long melodies and fantastic build ups really good stuff!! Artists:-Atlantis, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten, System F, Blank and Jones, Thrillseakers, Members Of Mayday, Coast 2 Coast, Push, Marc Et Claude, Binary Finary, Fragma, lost Witness, Matt Darey, Planet Perfecto, Safri Duo, Storm, Warrior and York. Hard House Energetic, pumping-the slower verison of Hardcore but still really fast, powerful and sends the crowds into a frenzy. Not really much to say really fast beats and big basslines and massive melodies, ALL I CAN SAY IS FAST AND POWERFUL. Very popular over in the UK at the moment, big label includes Nucleuz. Artists:-Nick Sentience, BK, Lisa Pin Up, Lisa Loud, Lisa Lashes, 911, Zini and Kantini, Public Domain, Warp Brothers, Norman Bass and Mario Picotto. OK-Here's a run down of the best mixers around at the moment and priced together with the list of the best decks around at the moment below it. Sorry no Scratch mixers-I'm not a Scratch DJ so I'm not going to suggest something I don't know about!! All mixers are nicely built, reliable and sturdy, and have wicked additional features. The turntables I have also tested and you won't find any better than the ones suggested here!!
